Above and Beyond Prior to arriving in Tobago, we did extensive research to...read morePrior to arriving in Tobago, we did extensive research to determine which tour operator was "the best". We were a family of four with two teens. After spending 4 days with David and Island Girl Tours, we couldn't have made a better choice. If we would have gone somewhere else, I'm confident that we wouldn't have seen all that we saw. From the first contact, David's main purpose was to tailor the perfect trip for us. The activities we did with David:
1) Island tour. We did a circuit of the island in a day. We didn't do the 12 hour tour, but the 8 hour tour was perfect (actually closer to 10). We stopped at Argyle falls. We loved the short hike to the falls and the kids loved doing cannonballs into the pools below the falls. On the hike to the falls, we stopped numerous times for David to point out beautiful birds or foliage. It was educational and really awesome. We stopped and had lunch in the beautiful Speyside at Gemma's. We saw beautiful beaches at every turn and David stopped numerous times for us to get awesome pictures. One bit of warning, the roads in Tobago are very narrow and very curvy. If you're subject to motion sickness (like me), you might want to take a Dramamine or get the scopolamine patch, before you're travelling in Tobago. David did the absolute best he could and stopped several times for me to get a breath of fresh air. We were never hurried. It was also awesome that David provided towels and water/soft drinks for us. Again, we felt very catered to.
2) Caribbean Coast tour. We started by touring a few small towns that we didn't quite get to with our Island Tour. We didn't ask David to do this, he just wanted to make sure we saw as much as possible. We boarded a boat in Buccoo and had an awesome trip up the coast to snorkel in two protected coves. Again, towels and drinks were provided. We then went down to the No Man's Land peninsula for a BBQ lunch and some beach time. When we were ready, they took us out to Nylon Pool where we were able to wade around for a while. Finally, we returned to Buccoo. As we were pulling into a Buccoo harbor, someone let David and our captain, Blondie, know that dolphins had recently been spotted. So, rather than simply docking (two minutes away), they immediately turned around, hit the throttle and backtracked a ways until they were able to locate the dolphins. We spent the next hour watching the dolphins. It was awesome. They could have easily just finished the tour, but they were excited for us to see the dolphins. Again, above and beyond.
3) Little Tobago and Goat Island snorkeling. This day, David drove us to Speyside where we met Randy for the trip out to Little Tobago. Randy brought a high-powered scope on a tripod. As we hiked through Little Tobago, he pointed out a trapdoor spider hole (the kids enjoyed looking for them the rest of the trip) and spotted numerous birds. He immediately put the scope on the birds, so we could see them up close. It was amazing. We then snorkeled in front of Goat Island and it was equally awesome. Life jackets were provided for the less-accomplished swimmers (me), but it was super safe and fun. Randy jumped in the water with us and pointed out several different species we might have overlooked.
4) Because David wonted us to fully experience Main Ridge Trail, he insisted on taking us to Gilpin Trail. We are so glad he did. We had a beautiful hike through the forest looking at other birds, waterfalls and foliage. This was another awesome half-day trip.
One of the nights, we did a bonfire at his house on the beach. We met his lovely wife, Anna, and my kids enjoyed showing her how to do the Country Swing and the line dance to Cotton Eyed Joe. It was really great and we felt like we were hanging out with old friends.
Since the leatherback turtles have started to come on the beaches at night and lay their eggs, David really wanted us to have that experience. He has a friend that monitors the beach to make sure the turtles can lay safely. Since it was at night, David asked if it would be okay if he called us late at night to go see the turtles. We said we would be happy to go in the middle of the night if necessary. One of the nights, David called us at 12:30 in the morning to tell us a turtle had come up on the beach. He came to our hotel 20 minutes later and drove us to Turtle Beach where we spent an hour watching a leatherback lay eggs, cover the next and lumber back to the water. Yes, it was 1:30 in the morning, but it was so, so worth it. David also took us to Pigeon Point for the day to see the beach there.
Some of these were "throw ins" by David to make sure we had the best time possible. I won't tell you what we paid for and what was a throw-in so that I don't handcuff him in the future, but there was a lot he did for us to simply accentuate our trip.
I can't recommend David and Island Girl Tours any higher. We've toured a lot of the Caribbean and Hawaii. I can't say we've ever had a better, more thorough guide. You will not regret booking with Island Girl.
PS As a side, David and Anna have a house listed on Air BNB, Bacolet Bliss. This is where we had the bonfire. After spending an evening there, I wish we would have stayed there rather than the Magdalena Grand.read less

He was great from the moment of booking, making sure we had anything we would need for the day, customised the tour so our toddler could come along but still have us a real adventure. He really went the extra mile at every opportunity.
Took us for doubles first thing (which are delicious!!) and had a story for every road, why things were the way they were on the island. The tour consists of little hikes and waterfalls that are safe wet exciting, our daughter managed to walk all day across the rocks and David helped us climb the rock faces and steep tracks with her. We could have gone higher through the levels if we were without her but I was still able to dive off the waterfalls and get what felt like a full experience.
If you're into food, he'll also take you around plantations and take you to pick local fruits off tree to taste. Had some delicious guavas, giant star fruit, coconuts, almonds straight off trees and also took us to two amazing authentic local restaurants through the day. Taught us about bread fruit and took us to get bread fruit pie which is phenomenal!!
When the day went on, he knew we weren't to be available for Sunday school so found us a bar / restaurant to see a steelband play along with a beachside bbq, this wasn't an added extra. He did this out of his own time and even drove us all home late so we didn't have to get a taxi - yet again going above and beyond for us.
The next day he took us to pigeon point with some amazing white sand beach and guided us on the nylon pools tour. Got us a discount on jet skis and looked after our daughter on the boat so me and my wife could go out and jetski without any worry. Jemima (my daughter) absolutely loved him and I couldn't have felt happier to leave her with him.
Also a huge highlight as my wife broke her phone while on holiday, David takes photos of everything and send you all of them at the end of the day. Which means you get to get on with the day and not have to worry about stopping all the time to take pictures!!
When we come back to tobago in a year or so we'll definitely give him a call. Whether that is for a tour or just to meet for a catch up over a meal. David really made us all feel like we became friends by the end of the day.read less

We were a group of four, and had our hearts set on a boat tour despite what turned out to be less than ideal tides and weather. David made it happen for us, and we had a blast swimming in the rain, eating delicious food on a nearly underwater No Man's Land, singing, laughing, learning about Tobago's history and wildlife, and generally having an incredible day all together. He felt like one of the group from the beginning! We had planned to do the bioluminescence tour that evening but given the high tides, David helped us figure out another plan - dinner at a lovely restaurant where we watched it rain and saw gorgeous lightning over the water. David was responsive, flexible, responsible, and fun - everything you could ask for in a guide. Can't wait to get back to Tobago and take another of his fantastic tours - thank you David!read less
Best Tour You Could Hope For DAVID IS AMAZING. We are from America and have a...read moreDAVID IS AMAZING. We are from America and have a local T&T Tour Guide that spent 20 years in Canada made us feel comfortable before we ever contacted him.
He was very communicative and even helped up arrange a Boat Tour with another individual before he ever met us or we paid him a dollar. It was very kind and the Boat Tour was great and the highlight of our trip...until we met David that is.
He was on time, friendly, welcoming, and had everything we would need to make our day comfortable. We had thought about driving around the Island ourselves, but after 15 minutes with him that would have been a huge mistake. Right off the bat there was a van selling Doubles just outside of our walking radius had been and he immediately turned around and treated us to Doubles (a must eat). No extra charge, he insisted (he did this throughout the day, just got us a beer or a drink out of what we had already paid him which blew us both away in terms of customer service).
What sets David apart was that he took us to wildly remote places. I know Tobago isn't still fully open, but there were Waterfalls that felt so remote and if we stayed their all day (tempting!) we might not see a soul. We saw the ENTIRE Island and he was honest about what we couldn't get to because of Covid restrictions and all that made us do was want to return to Tobago again and honestly spend more time with David.
We chatted about history (David knows a vast wealth of Tobago's), the world, science, books, art, movies. He took us to a private art shop and we got a wrap-around skirt for my wife, a beautiful sculpture, and some earrings that were all a great price and high-quality. It was a place to just consume all the beautiful work of some local artisans.
I guess this boils down to that my wife and I spent 26 days on our honeymoon. Our day with David was miles ahead of any of the other 25 (and we had a GREAT TIME, theme parks, Key West, Orlando, Beaches galore, family, friends, etc.). If you take some time with David and IslandGirlTours, you won't have to guess which day of your vacation was the best.
...AND he took over 100 photos of us and shared them with us...what more could you ask for. The ones on my phone are half as good as the ones he took. My wife has them, but check out his Instagram for Jan 12, 2022 if you want the full details.read less

Let me begin by saying that David is one of the most professional, reliable and engaging guides I have had in all my world travels (60 countries). At all times he was able to provide detailed information and history behind what we are seeing, doing, etc... Not just pointing, stopping to take a picture and moving on. I would not even consider other tour guides out there when booking tours given you will miss so much by having an 8 hour tour vs. an 11 or 12 hour tour (and remember, if it's private you can always cut it down to 10 at the end of the day).
Regarding hiking/nature - David is also your go to guide here. Case in point - in the bird trail in the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, we went further than any of the dozen other guides on the tour. The majority of them stop at only the first two waterfalls. We hiked on-wards another 15-20 minutes and found an incredible third waterfall where it was clear it is rarely seen by tourists given the growth along the trail (minor growth but noticeable that there is less foot traffic).
Outside of the above, David is excellent with knowing great spots for doubles, roti, fresh seafood (eastern side of the island), logistics - airport/hotel pickups/dropoffs, etc.. He does it all.

The motmots and cocrico showed no fear of us! At one point, the bamboo arched above like the ceiling of a cathedral. And David was a wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna. I have visited Tobago on previous occasions and thought I knew the island pretty well but David showed us places I never before considered or even knew existed.
Before we arrived in Tobago David and I had discussions on what my family wanted to see or experience and he created the perfect itinerary for our trip.
We really appreciated David's flexibility because some of the places we visited are so lovely that we wanted to spend more time in certain locations and this resulted in the the tour being adapted as we went along, to accommodate as much as possible, without missing out on other things. We actually went way over the scheduled time that David joined us for dinner and drinks late into the evening!
My family felt so comfortable with David that it was like spending time with an old friend. Nothing was too much for David and we laughed so much.
